According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery, the Brazilian butt lift was the fastest-growing plastic surgery procedure in America for 2014. We’ve certainly seen an increase in inquiries in the Miami area, and the “big butt” look on pop stars like Iggy Azalea and Nicki Minaj certainly seems to suggest that the Brazilian butt lift is a plastic surgery procedure that will only get more popular as the years go on.
The Brazilian butt lift is a fat transfer surgery, meaning that the buttocks are augmented with fat taken from other parts of your body. This makes the procedure even more helpful, as it allows you to remove pockets of loose or flabby tissue elsewhere on your body, giving yourself a more pleasing contour all around. However, it also makes the recovery period more important to the success of the surgery.
When fat is transferred to a new area on your body, it needs to “revascularize”- in other words, it needs to reattach to blood vessels and surrounding tissue in order for the fat cells to survive. Before it gets reattached, these fat cells are fairly delicate, and can’t take much pressure without dying and being reabsorbed into the body. It is therefore advisable that you refrain from putting any major pressure on your butt for at least 2 weeks following the surgery.
To avoid putting pressure on your buttocks:
- Avoid sitting for the first few weeks after the procedure
- Sleep lying down on your stomach, not your back
- Start walking as soon as possible after the procedure
- Begin exercising after at least two weeks of recovery
- Wear a compression garment to properly shape the augmentation
Remember to maintain a healthy diet and avoid tobacco products immediately after the surgery. If you feel sore from the post-operative swelling, you can take pain medication, but do not mix it with alcohol. Get plenty of rest and give yourself time to heal.
