What Can Laser Skin Rejuvenation Do For You
There are felt to be three ways in which our skin generally ages. The first consists of the textural and color changes that occur on the surface of the skin along with fine lines and wrinkles. The second change is thinning of the dermis (deep layer) of the skin. The last area is generalized laxity of the skin and its descent due to gravity. All three areas can be addressed by high intensity light or energy.
Laser Hair Removal:

Improvement of Skin Surface Changes
Both Lasers and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) can improve the appearance of small dilated capillaries seen on the surface of sun damaged and aging skin. Additionally the presence of 'age spots' and pigment irregularities can often times be spectacularly improved. Color correction is the goal with IPL . Additionally the arrival of fractional laser resurfacing has replaced IPL in individuals who want more aggressive smoothing of the
skin in addition to improvement in skin color. Nevertheless all the treatments require multiple treatments sessions space 4-6 weeks apart.
Correction of Thinning of the Skin
A number of different lasers have been used for thickening of the skin. The lasers work by creating controlled damage to the deeper skin by virtue of the heat they generate- resulting in a healing response that includes the creation of even more collagen. This results in a thicker appearing skin and can improve the appearance of deeper wrinkles. A wide variety of laser devices are available to help patients thicken their skin.
Skin Tightening
This is the as yet elusive goal of laser technology although Carbon Dioxide Lasers and RF (Radiofrequency) devices can produce improvement in a certain number of patients. The problem is predictability of results. Some patients have seemingly great results and others have virtually no changes as all. Results depend of course on the technique of the laser specialist but I have found that there is a distinct difference between patients
in their reaction to the energy that is applied to the skin. Essentially all individuals heal differently. We all may make scar but in different quantities. Still the technology has been shown to work and is certainly an appropriate treatment for someone who has minimal need of skin tightening is not a surgical candidate perhaps or simply does not want to invest the time in a surgical procedure.
Benefits of Laser Skin Rejuvenation
Laser rejuvenation can do things that surgery can't accomplish in that the textural and color issues of the skin can be improved whereas surgery only addresses the skin tightening aspect of rejuvenation. Laser rejuvenation is an outpatient procedure that typically requires no anesthesia and very little 'down time'. Costs may be less than traditional surgery but may be less predictable in obtaining significant results, particularly
with skin tightening.
